Samplology: The Philadelphia International Records Chapter
Date: 03/14/2008
Feel good music is the term that immediately came to mind as I listened to Samplology: The Philadelphia International Records Chapter. The Samplology series is a mixed compilation of Hip-Hop and R&B heavyweights & the original blends that inspired their tracks. Each chapter highlights a select artist, producer or genre. This chapter of the mixtape series covers tracks from Philadelphia International Records which was formed in 1971 by record pioneers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Gamble and Huff were responsible for the famous ‘Philly Sound’ from such artists as Teddy Pendergrass, Patti LaBelle, The O’Jays, Lou Rawls and many more. The introduction of the mix features producer Kenny Gamble commenting on his feelings about the first time he ever heard his music sampled by another artist. This mix will take you from the 1970’s on into the millennium combining R&B heavyweights from back in the day with Hip Hop artists of today such as Ne-Yo, Amerie, Big Pun, and Jay-Z. The mix features such tracks as "Hurry Up This Way Again" by the Stylistics, "Wake Up Everybody" by Teddy Pendergrass, "Darlin’ Darlin’ Baby" by the O’Jays, as well as the remix of "Why Can’t We Fall In Love" by Amerie, and "Money, Power, & Respect" by the L.O.X. featuring Lil’ Kim.
The purpose of the Samplology series is to get listeners to dig deeper into the history of black music. With so much music being sampled, the younger generations have no idea where the music originates from. The Philadelphia International Records series of Samplology combines the feel-good music from back in the day with the mixology of today’s Hip Hop music.
