Canadian songstress Melanie Fiona releases her sophomore album, “The MF Life” today, March 20th. The new record, which is released through the SRC Records and Universal Republic partnership, describes the story of a broken heart, may or may not have been related to her three year relationship with CSI,: Miami actor Adam Rodriguez.
The first single “Gone and Never Coming Back,” written by Fiona and Jermaine Cole aka J. Cole was released early last year. “4 AM,” the second single, ruffled Fiona’s heart, leading her to wanting to hurt somebody, because she has been mistreated by a lover who was cheating on her with another woman. Fiona sang, “Sitting here feelin kinda crazy, but not just any cra-zayyy. It’s the kind you feel, when you love somebody & I don’t doubt my baby is callin somebody else baby & I can’t sit still…look how gone it got me…” She continued by saying that she does not deserve this life. “I’d make the perfect wife. But I know love’s a sacrifice. But who’s gonna sacrifice for me & give me all their time…”
Since her debut album, “The Bridge,” came out in 2009, Fiona’s music has matured to the point of showing a more sensitive and personal side of the Toronto native. From a broken heart to redemption, “The MF Life” will show to listeners that the songstress is not afraid of taking a stand for what she believes in. The record will showcase the singer as a writer, who has learned to master the element of painting a young woman at ease with herself.
“The MF Life” contains a more sentimental and acoustic tone, featuring Fiona’s songwriting on eight songs including, “Change the Record” (featuring B.o.B), “I Been That Girl,” co-written with fellow Canadian native Drake, “Running” (featuring Nas), “L.O.V.E.,” a duet with John Legend, “Gone and Never Coming Back” and “6 AM” (featuring T-Pain).
Riding high off her two Grammy Awards win for Best Traditional R&B Performance for her collaboration with Cee-Lo Green on the song “Fool For You,” Fiona showed a desire of wanting to be respected as an artist and as a woman. Even though “The MF Life” is an album about heartbreak, Fiona assured her listeners by telling them that it’s ok to feel love and to let others love you. Indeed, as the young singer said herself, “I know love’s a sacrifice. But who’s gonna sacrifice.” At the end, “The MF Life” with its soulful vibes and R&B tempo, will certainly take the world by storm.
