Chris Brown 'Matured, Schooled On Perception' ?

Chris BrownWhile most of North America was cheering on the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts Sunday, it might have been a difficult day for Chris Brown. Just a year ago news broke that Brown and Rihanna had been involved in a car accident, followed by allegations of a domestic dispute just prior to the 51st Annual Grammy Awards.

Now, a year later, it is hard to believe how much has happened for Chris Brown and the way we now perceive the once crowned 'Prince of R&B/Pop'.

After pleading guilty to a felony assault charge, appearing in numerous interviews, and apologizing repeatedly for his actions last February, sources say Brown has learned a lot over the last year.

"He has matured a lot in the last year and people will see that when he re-emerges," a source told PEOPLE late last week. "He wants to be a better person before he gets serious with someone again. This wasn't something he took lightly."

Releasing an album that some say came too soon, Brown seemed assured that success would follow. In the end however, he quickly learned the fact that not everyone is forgiving. Whilst promoting "Graffiti," Brown lashed out at retailers for allegedly "blackballing" his album by telling fans it was not in stock. Retailers dismissed the singer's claims but, his resulting album sales proved to be much lower than any of his previous efforts ("Exclusive," "Chris Brown"). Brown has also been heckled while traveling and promoting the album. Now schooled on just how much a private matter can affect his career, sources say Brown will likely recover a better person.

"He's learned that when you're a celebrity, public perception is fragile," said Sway Calloway of MTV, who interviewed Chris Brown in November (2009) shortly after Rihanna delivered her first on-air interview on ABC's 20/20 with Diane Sawyer. "But I think he'll recover. He's a good dude who made a big mistake."

Moving into the new year, Brown continues to follow rules, avoiding contact with Rihanna. Most important however, the "Crawl" singer is moving forward. He will release a mixtape on Valentine's Day (February 14) titled "In My Zone" and will return to movie theaters in the Screen Gems film "Takers" alongside T.I., Idris Elba and Michael Ealy.

YES! 2010 will be a MUCH better year for Chris! Slowly things will get better. Not everyone is there yet, but they will come. I was SO happy to hear the response of the Miami crowd during the SOS Haiti event. I wanted to cry because it signified so much! I'm proud of him and I hope that he will continue to be a good person and learn from his mistakes and be better. - I wish him much success! *kisses* R.M.

CHRIS I THINK THAT 2010 WILL BE YOUR YEAR TO SHINE!! DON'T FEED INTO OPINIONS TOO MUCH BECAUSE MOST OF THE TIME THEY FALL SHORT OF POSITIVE KNOWLEDGE. I ENJOYED YOUR PERFORMANCE FOR HAITI, A SHOUT OUT TO "BET" FOR MAKING THIS HAPPEN!! KEEP IT MOVING BREEZY, PEACE OUT

  6. Sarah says:

I'm glad to see Chris is finally learned his lesson. People just need to let the past be the past. MOVE THE HELL ON! He becoming a man now. Chris you won me back as a fan. I'm happy to see you growing up. We are all praying for.

  7. Angela says:

I absolutely love Chris Brown too, and I sincerely believe that he is a good guy who made a big mistake. In my opinion, I honestly do believe that him seeing his mother abused for 6 years when he was seven years old had a lot do to with the altercation with Rihanna. I was so happy when he performed for S.O.S. Chris, keep your head up and continue to move forward. Learn from this experience and continue doing what you have to do. Keep God in your life, and seek his guidance. Keep your head up. I will always be your fan, on an unconditional basis. Do not let last year repeat itself. Learn from it and do not let the Rihanna incident define you, because that is not who you are: you made a major mistake and is paying the price. KEEP YOUR HEAD HIGH!! I love ya!

Chris will be okay as long as he is learning from this situation. As some may have noticed at the S.O.S. concert, he still has hoards of fans who still love his music and overall artistry. People who consistent analyze every step he makes but he will still have to do what makes him happy. I pray there are people close to him who are able to give loving and stern guidance and that his spirit is willing to follow. I think 2010 will be a marvelous year for him with the movie "Takers" and his plans for touring nationally and internationally.

  9. Tracie says:

I positively love Chris Brown! I was moved to tears during his performance on the BET Haiti Special this weekend. He did a fantastic job. I'm proud of the way he's handled this drama and I am looking forward to hearing his mixtape In My Zone. Graffiti is still one of my favorite albums this year!
