A traditional Holiday toy
drive with a skate party twist was the scene of Devyne Stephens annual Toy Drive for his
non-profit Devyne Intervention. Together with The People’s Station, Atlanta’s V103, Yung Joc and Jermaine Dupri, the Southside
of Atlanta came out to Skate Towne skating rink in College
Park to show support and give back to the youth of Atlanta.
"It’s an annual event for me, I’m from the Southside, I grew
up in Red Oak Housing Projects not too far from here, so this is like my
stomping grounds and because the community has done so much for me it’s only
right that I come back and play my part in giving back," says Devyne Stephens.
It was clear to see that many special guests shared the "home again" sentiment donning skates and taking a few laps around the rink. I caught
them during their pit stops to see their inspiration in “giving back” to the
community for the holidays.
While Yung Joc wasn't rolling on 8 wheels, the "It's Going Down"
rapper was humbled just to be asked to participate in this initiative.
"I’m a philanthropist, I love life, and I felt that it was
only fair…to give back to less fortunate families. I’m grateful that Devyne…V103
reached out to me…it warms me to know that people consider me the type of
person that would want to be apart of this."
The event's emcee DJ
Greg Street, of V103 explains how Holiday Toy
Drives are his specialty.
"I’ve been doing toy drives in Atlanta for 10 years Me and Master P started
first…For the past 10 years on Christmas eve and Christmas Day. I’ve been going
around to the different housing projects, Orphan homes, Boys and Girls Clubs
and we make sure their Christmas’ are straight. Then after I finish with that,
I go to the radio station."
Atlanta's
newly elected Mayor, Kasim Reed, dropped in to show his support of the
initiative and Celebrity Barber, Bobby of Bobby’s
World $100 Haircut gave free haircuts to young skaters, to do his part
in giving back.
The proceeds of the
benefit go to support Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, at Hughes Spalding.
