R&B packed a punch when nominees for the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards were read Wednesday. Leading the pack with ten nominations, Beyonce snapped up three of music's most coveted awards along with Maxwell and Trey Songz.
On the strength of her celebrated 2008 effort "I Am... Sasha Fierce," Beyonce not only dominated much of the R&B categories (including Best R&B Song and Best Contemporary R&B Album), the "Video Phone" singer earned nods for Song of the Year ("Singles Ladies") and Album of the Year.
Also up for Record of the Year, Beyonce ("Halo") is joined by returning R&B balladeer Maxwell ("Pretty Wings"). Scoring a career best with six nominations, Maxwell ends up becoming this year's top male R&B nominee, following in the footsteps of Usher, Al Green and Michael Jackson. In addition to his Record of the Year nod for the chart-topping hit "Pretty Wings," Maxwell earned nominations for Best R&B Album, Best R&B Song, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance ("Love You") and Best Pop Instrumental Performance for "Phoenix Rise".
In addition to Beyonce and Maxwell, "I Invented Sex" singer Trey Songz continues his Grammy-nominated streak, just one year after earning his first nod for "Can't Help But Wait" with his 2009 effort"Ready" (Best Contemporary R&B Album).
John Legend, Keri Hilson (Best New Artist/Best Rap Sung Collaboration), Musiq Soulchild, Kanye West, Jay Z, T-Pain, India.Arie, Jazmine Sullivan, Charlie Wilson, Anthony Hamilton, Lady Gaga, The Kings of Leon, Black Eyed Peas, Jamie Foxx, Pleasure P, Drake, Eminem, Kid Cudi, Fabolous, T.I., Common and Mos Def are also nominees (see list below). Gospel nominees include Mary Mary, Donald Lawrence, Kierra Sheard, Heather Headley and Smokie Norful (see Gospel nominees here).
The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards are slated to air January 31, 2010 on CBS.

beyonce is SOOOOO OVERRATED!!!!!!!!!
ii like the news in this nroom n i like music.
Regret, Regret, and more regret. We can all see that 50 cent was right. This is officially the Beyonce and Taylor Swift awards. Letoya keep your head up love, the Grammy awards are not realistic awards, Not Anymore!!!
WTF!! No nomination for Teena Marie. This whole thing is a joke!!!!!!
I hope the Grammy voters get things right this year. Jazmine Sullivan deserves a win after being nominated for 5 last year and winning NOTHING. Pleasure P was definitely a shocker. His CD wasn't all that good AT ALL. If Ledisi doesn't win something, I'm going to RIOT! lol... and T-Pain, WTF? Calvin Richardson? Ummm, OK I guess, but Ginuwine had a much better comeback CD. It would have been nice to see Brandy nominated too but even though I look her to death, "Human" was very inhumane. LOL. Finally, it's ABOUT DAMN TIME Eric Roberson got nominated. He has been making masterpieces for years and has been overlooked simply because he's an independent artist. It took 5 albums for somebody to notice him. People need to wake up. They don't know good, real R&B even if it smacks them in the ears.
I do think it's kinda obvious that Beyonce has some sort of special "pull" among the Grammy voters because even in years when she doesn't have an album out, she ends up getting nominated for SOMETHING. Hell, last year she was nominated for a live performance of "Me, Myself & I" and we all know how old that song is. Beyonce is a great performer, but come on. 10 nominations? I'm not hating, I'm just saying. There are plenty of other female performers out there who deserved Grammy nods this year, like Whitney Houston and Chrisette Michelle. And can somebody explain to me how Melanie Fiona was nominated for "It Kills Me"? It's a great song and all but it just came out and the Grammy nomination eligibility period ended on August 31 this year. Hmmmm....
I always defend Bey, because like MJ - her Dad is the problem - not her. But "I AM..." in general is not strong enough to warrant all them nominations IMO.
@Sam-Leave LL alone. All entertainers mouth-off, even the good ones. Teena Marie and Faith Evan's duet Can't last a day should've been nominated for Best R&B group, duo.
@Sam! I heard that comment as well. It does make you wonder about LL's personality behind the scenes and why hip-hop cats don't show respect to him, despite his career longevity.@Annnonymous. this too makes folks wonder what is going on behind the scenes. Letoya had one of the Best RnB albums of this year and was snubbed. She herself has said that she feels that Mathew Knowles still tries to keep her down, even as a solo artist and I'm starting to beleive this.
I also noticed that on the telecast that LL made fun of Maxwell's adlibing on the MJ tribute! Years ago at the Soul-train Music awards, LL Cool J mimicked Maxwell's performance on that show too! Although he had a pretty-nice interview with Maxwell during the telecast, you still don't see fellow artists making fun of one another's performances, publically and blantantly!...Could it be that LL is jealous again of another artist in the industry who ladies love just as much or more???..It makes one wonder why LL has never hit the bigtime with multi-platinum albums(not just 1x platinum), leading man roles and across the board, hip-hop industry respect? I'm dissappointed in LL for his disrectfulness of a good-natured guy(Maxwell) that has damn-near solely help keep an ailing genre like R&B alive! LL's long-term career is a rarity and inspiring, but his beef with R&B singers is NOT! Even-more so in that Maxwell is NOT a rapper or actor! LL could make for a great episode of Tvone's Unsung!!
