Compelled after reading the script for 'Winnie,' Jennifer Hudson says she's honored to have been selected for the role.
"Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman and I’m honored to be the actress asked to portray her," Hudson said in statement this week.
As previously reported, Hudson will appear as Winnie Mandela, ex wife of noted South African leader Nelson Mandela.
Starring alongside award-winning actor Morgan Freeman (Mandela), Hudson will take on the complex role of an embattled and controversial woman.
"She has been depicted as the mother and wife who was a steadfast supporter of her activist husband and who was jailed herself for campaigning for his release and fighting against apartheid," reports Variety. "Her image was subsequently tarnished by association with a bodyguard who murdered a 14-year old alleged informer, and she was later convicted of fraud."
Confident in the forthcoming picture, Hudson says "This is a powerful part of history that should be told."
Intent on capturing the good, bad and the ugly, sources say the film will begin production May 2010 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

jenn people are often judgemental and just plain mean spirited and the one thing that you have got is that resilient and a strong present about you. i was reading some negatives statements and some one was commenting that you was this and that and all of that is just people and their opinions which does npt mean jack, you stay focus and do your best and thats all that counts and loving that hansome little bundle of joy of yours, i just love it you are a mom thats a blessing from heaven above.
JENNIFER YOU GIVE IT ALL YOU HAVE GOT . THIS WAS MADE FOR YOU TO PLAY AND I KNOW THAT YOU WILL BRING IT AND THIS WILL BE VERY POWERFUL . AND PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE NAY-SAYERS YOU JUST PUT ALL OF YOUR ENERGY INTO YOUR NEW EPIC AND HISTORY MAKING MOVIE.YOU WILL NAIL THIS ONE AND THERS STILL BLESSINGS COMING YOUR WAY.
I hope they tell the whole story, warts and all. Winnie isn't neccesarily the best role model for global civil rights. You don't fight on behalf of your people, and then do them dirt. In no way is she worthy of carrying the mantle "Mandela".
