"Every Girl" singer/artist Drake has just become the first person to come forward and speak of Sunday's controversial performance with Lil Wayne at the BET Awards 09'.
The performance, put together prior to the shocking death and subsequent tribute to Michael Jackson, became a subject of much scrutiny -- mainly aimed at BET earlier this week.
The scrutiny, due to the fact that Lil Wayne's daughter and other teenage girls were on stage while the rapper was using immense profanity and sexually tinged lyrics, has now been addressed in Drake's fresh interview with Complex Magazine.
In his sit down with Complex, Drake takes on the backlash, stating: "That, actually—to be honest—was a terrible idea that I’ll never do to myself again. But I was being pressed from different areas to perform, and I think what really happened at the BET Awards is with the passing of Mike, the climate really changed, as far as the award show goes. I don’t think it called for us to perform “Every Girl” and “Always Strapped,” and I think it was an award show filled with tributes and music and these genuine heartfelt speeches. And to sort of climax out of a very tongue-in-cheek point, and then people misconstruing Wayne’s daughters and her friends coming out on stage."
While addressing the BET performance, Drake also confirms that he did indeed injure himself and was thus sitting on the stool for that reason alone. But it is Drake's response to a question that involves BET's planning (Watching it at home, the BET Awards seemed to be a mess. Did it seem that way in person?) that is most interesting:
"Well, I can only speak for my portion of it. I had asked for something very specific for my performance and none of those were met, as far as production value, so… I understood my situation, as far as sitting in one place, and figured there was a way to make it interesting. But when I looked around and noticed that none of that was going on, I kind of just realized that it was going to be a loss for me. But at the end of the day, it is what it is."
For any parents and other viewers offended by the performance, Drake says "To anyone who was offended, my personal apologies, it wasn’t intended to offend anybody."
In related news, Drake has signed to Lil Wayne's Young Money and will release his anticipated debut later this year.
Lil Wayne has not issued a statement in relation to the BET Awards show but has canceled a multi-city/country European tour planned for this summer, click here for more on that story.
"Realtaulk",,i think you are completely incorrect yu say yu feel bad for Lil Wayne's daughter well thats very small of you. I Believe that when it comes down to it Lil Wayne does everything he does FOR HIS DAUGHTER! He Knows what sells, he's very passionate about what he does. People make such a big deal about something soooo small. Everyone has they're OWN mind! Do NOT blame people like Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj or Drake for OTHER PEOPLES Actions! If yu dont want your children to listen to the music then gain better control over them and STOP Them from listening, but do NOT Put these talented artists down.!
Black People we need to WAKE UP!!! Drake Lil Wayne and BET did u not know that THE WORLD WOULD BE WATCHIN!! I Blame BET I Blame Lil Wayne I Blame Drake Or you dont care as we all know that us as a people r raising our children solo and figure that some 10 year old wants to be like Lil Wayne or Drake ..So monitor your music... Intelligence takes much more work and u get much more RESPECT....
i cant believe what im hearing! im sixteen, and i hear songs like these around me, but it dosent mean i have to listen to it. are we that desensitized? its sad that kids my age and younger know the lyrics to these songs. i used to listen to that kind of music too untill i realized what it was doing to me... music DOES have an effect on you whether you know it or not, if you keep listening and listening to the wrong things you'll start accepting the wrong things.people start accepting performing sexual acts and being promiscuous because thats what he talks about..thats what people are worried about...bringing up ANOTHER generation of kids raised by kids...
anyways. I LOVE DRAKE. HE is the fcking BEST.
but yo tht video was sooo wack. n the reason y is becuase there it is tooo metaphorical n like insight put into it. kanye overthought this n it came out bad. im still Drakes #1!
you know what if wayne wants to put his children in that type of atmosphere then let him do him. everybody knows the regardless of this performance his children r growing up surrounded by this just because he is lil wayne. so i think people are making too big of a deal about it. i mean sure the lyrics were crude but people need to get past it. I am 15 years oldn i just think honest people r really taking this up the ass. its not tht serious. i have cuzzins that r like 7 n can tell u every lyric to this song. sometimes people makie it out to be more than it really is. as tht age i highly doubt the y r sittiting there and analyzing n interpreting what they r saying n what it means. ppl just need to let it go n get a life. tey argue about the little things.
as for drake. i thought his performance was mediocre but he had his reason. i think drakes apology was very big of him although i dont think it was necessary.
Some young people are so use to hearing, living, and speaking some of the language that was used doing Lil Wayne's performance that they wasn't even offended. How sad to applaud this performance which was totally inappropriate. I feel bad for Wayne's children especially his daughter!
this young girls no wat the be listen to... dese days you dont have no other choice so yall need to growm up
man watever yall need to find somthing eles to talk about it is so many young girls listen to this song so it really didnt matter if lil wayne daughter was on stage or not.. everybody heard the song it be on the radio all day... lil wayne rap about sex all the time soo it shouldnt matter
uhm Awilliams.. I'm 15 and I have friends that say.. and sometimes do worse things than stuff Lil Wayne and others did in that song. I really don't see what the big deal is i mean i knew every word to this song in May. One little Lil Wayne performance wom't scar me for life.. and that was his freakin daughter and her friends on stage!! She knows what her dad says and does.. THE WHOLE FREAKIN COUNTRY DOES! I really think that this is just some stupid stuff. People have been knowing what Lil Wayne raps about for years. I'm getting tired of this crap. Let the man make his money.
Shanay and Tevin you are clearly sick. They sang about sex and lewd descriptins of vaginal parts in the presence of minors. Please tell me it is not ok to discourse graphic intercourse in front of your child or any other child. They are kids why would any adult male talk about sex in front of them> you two need to have your heads checkd out.
Really kidd!!!! Come on that's Wayne's child. It shouldn't even matter what she dose! The performance was a good one! Lil Wayne killed it and that all there is to it! Hop Off and stop bring the unnecessary drama!
I think people really need to get a life..Everybody is loving the every girl song right now the children ,grown ups so dissecting the performance is unnecessary his daughter is everywhere with him she know how he talks. I've heard children say worse Drake needed to get off the stool but unfortunately he couldn't
