Mary J Blige Mary J. Blige may be a veteran when it comes to R&B and Hip Hop/Soul but that by no means is indicative of a need to stay in a specific lane. In addition to maintaining staying power on the charts, Mary J. Blige says she's going to do her... even if that means using autotune technology like T-Pain, Ron Browz and so many others.

"It was for effect," Blige told Hot 97s Angie Martinez when asked about the use of autotune on her new single "One" (feat. Drake).

"I wanted Crazy Mary to get her shine on. She couldn't get her shine with my regular voice. I used the effect. I used it as a telephone effect or reverb".

Blige defending the use of autotune on her single comes just days after Jay-Z declared the "death of autotune" at Summer Jam. Since the declaration, artists including T-Pain have said their use of autotune will continue regardless. Near surprising, Mary J. Blige is, in a way, joining T-Pain stating: "I won't say that it bothers me, because people do what they have to do. I can't pass judgment. Everyone else does what they do, and everyone has their own opinion. To each his own. Do what you do, because I do what I do."

A new album from Blige, rumored to be titled "Technical Difficulty," is due in stores this fall.

I like jiggas music and what he does but to go as far as to declare the autotune dead is a bit ambitious. If you want to remain relevant nowadays you gotta do what is being done out there to sell. Artists such as Mariah and Mary. J realise this

  2. Sam says:

She is one of very, very few artists who consistently delivers everytime! Her vocals don't sound bad at all for her natural voice is STILL the dominant force in this song! It appears in her case she didn't use heavy filtering, because you can still recognize immediately that its her! Jamie Foxx used heavy filters on Blame it, but Mary still sounds like Mary! As for Jay-Z, he is more than likely venting as an MC because every vet and new artist is requesting the use of Autotune behind the scenes at several artists/label staff meetings and he sees this by him being a former label head! Autotune has been around for years in the movie industry and what is happening is that T-Pain has proven himself as an instant hitmaker in a short amount of time! Labels are always looking for a quick, fast hit and the current Autotune trend is another addition to a common practice in the music industry! What will determine its future is if we, the music-buying public still wants to here it or not!

Mary's walkin a thin line wit me on this 1...As a legendary artists, riding the coattails of a fad is never the answer. And as a legendary artist, sum1 who i thought took pride in their music and being a TRENDSETTER, I think she of all people should have more respect for the craft. Autotune is taking the talent out of music. And those who use it, and continue to use it are only doing so because they have no other choice. Mary, u've come this far without, Please, PLEASE dont jump on the bandwagon now. Autotune is played out, cuz the industry played it out. And i hope the death of autotune is really upon us

  7. AXXX says:

  8. Sylvia aka Sweet says:

At the way things are going, "Liyah" sadly This is just the beginning for autotune, now my girl Christina is going to use it! I personal don't like the way this is going for music have people lost their love to hear their artist really sing and to hear their real singing voice? I blame T-Pain!! Darn it, why is everyone going to the T-pain route, is this some marketing ploy what sells best that is what we will make..................AUTOTUNE CRAP SHOVELED DOWN PEOPLE EARS!..............Another admit, I'm kinda liking that new song but Mary J, but I hope her whole album isn't t-pain autotuned. Please, NOOOOOO!!

  9. liyah says:

There's so much controversy over the use of autotune. Jay-Z is over here trying to pronounce it dead, yet Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Drake, and others are continuing to use it today. Is autotune really dead, or is it just the beginning???

  10. Paul561 says:
