June, the beginning of summer, Black Music Month and often one of the biggest month's for new releases in R&B/Soul and Hip Hop. With that said, this year is no different as everyone from Ginuwine and Mos Def to Teena Marie and Al B. Sure! are releasing new albums.
Kicking off a busy month, soulful icon Teena Marie returns after a slight three year break with "Congo Square". Notably Marie's thirteenth album, "Congo Square" features the popular Faith Evans assisted single "Can't Last A Day" in addition to collaborative efforts with Howard Hewett, MC Lyte, and even Shirley Murdock ("As We Lay").
Speaking of the unexpected collaboration with Faith Evans, Teena Marie offered: "It was after I had recorded the song (that) I got the idea to put Faith on it. I’ve always loved Faith and her vocal style. She reminds me of me. Her correlation with Biggie - having a career with him and without him - reminds me of me and Rick. I feel like she’s a younger me. Of the younger ladies, she’s the one I love most".
Sharing a June 9th release date with Teena Marie, former Pretty Ricky singer Pleasure P is amped up for the release of "The Introduction of Marcus Cooper". The album, led by the singles "Did You Wrong" and "Boyfriend #2," finds the singer collaborating with Yung Joc and late Grammy Award-winning producer Static Major.
Dubbing himself "The New Bad Boy of R&B," Pleasure P told Singersroom he'd spent well over a year in the studio recording this album.
"The Introduction of Marcus Cooper" also features production from Cool & Dre, Rico Love and Jim Jonsin.
As June progresses you'll also find new releases from Vanessa Williams ("The Real Thing"), Mos Def ("the Ecstatic"), Will Dowing ("Classique"), and Laura Izibor ("Truth Be Told") but, June's anticipated fresh start comes in the form of Ginuwine's "A Man's Thoughts".
Led by the single "Last Chance," Ginuwine's "A Man's Thoughts" is not only the former "Pony" and "Differences" singer's first album in four years, it also marks a new beginning for the star.
Set for release June 23, Ginuwine's effort comes under a new deal with Notifi Records and features his first recording with Timbaland (who helmed most of Ginuwine's first few albums including the multi-Platinum selling "Ginuwine...The Bachelor) in a number of years.
Speaking of the reunion with Timbaland at Singersroom, Ginuwine said "At the end of the day what matters is we were able to come together and work together again."
"A Man's Thoughts" also features production from Bryan Michael Cox and The Underdogs.
Speaking of returns, former "Sexy Versus" singer Al B. Sure! is feeling at home with his first album in over a decade.
Aptly titled "Honey I'm Home," Al B. Sure's new album comes packed with thirteen new songs including "Fragile," "4 Life" and the lead single "I Love It (Papi Aye, Aye, Aye)"... For fans of Sure's previous works, the singer told Billboard "Honey I'm Home is "In Effect Mode" on steroids".
