Grammy-winning R&B singer John Legend has been unveiled as one of TIME Magazine’s 2009 most influential 100. But, that’s not the best part, Legend’s honor has been penned by none other than iconic music veteran Quincy Jones. Jones, the same man who aided the careers of Michael Jackson, Donna Summer and Chaka Khan, shared words of admiration in TIME’s 100 late this week putting Legend in the same realm as Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith and the Brothers Johnson. “I’ve always said you have to know where you come from to know where you are going, and what I love about John is his complete understanding of where he comes from, musically and spiritually,” says Jones. “His roots are steeped in gospel â the common chord of black music â but he is also classically trained, and he has embraced all the musical knowledge that he has and allowed it to influence him creatively.” But Jones put icing on the cake telling TIME readers “At this point in his career, he reminds me of a young Donny Hathaway, and I have no doubt that as he continues to grow, he will become as artistically and socially significant as Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder. He is a genius, and we’ve seen only the tip of the iceberg”. John Legend is joined by Zac Efron, Tavis Smiley, and the ladies of ABC’s “The View” as some of the most influential beings in 2009.
