They say the best rollercoasters are full of loops, twists, turns and unexpected dips, but for Janet Jackson 2008 turned out to be just like her song "Rollercoaster ("Discipline")," a winding, twisting, and unexpectedly shocking year.
Kicking off 2008 with a much-anticipated album entitled "Discipline," Janet Jackson returned to the stage in what had been billed to be her biggest comeback since 2001s "All For You". Unfortunately for Jackson the comeback would be overshadowed by several controversies including a fabled tour, marketing and promotion meltdown and an eventual pulling away from music entirely.
Lead by the hit singe "Feedback," Jackson's album "Discipline" stormed onto the charts in March with just over 181,000 copies sold -- a short number for Jackson who had previously moved nearly 300,000 - 500,000 copies of other albums. Blamed on promotion from her new contract with Def Jam, who later pulled further promotion of Jackson's album and any subsequent music videos, Jackson took to the blogosphere to put the label on blast. But it seemed too late as "Feedback," a huge dance hit featured on Tyra Banks' widely popular show America's Next Top Model and nearly every prime time show, was dampered by a music video that even hardcore fans slammed. Nonetheless, Jackson pushed forward with plans to hit the road.
Launching her first tour in several years, Jackson plotted a massive jaunt that included both a North American and European leg set to run through the end of 2008. Much like "Discipline's" expected success, the tour collapsed...literally.
After kicking off successfully in Vancouver, the "Rock Witchu" singer, fell ill and cancelled several dates beginning an irreversable slide down hill. For weeks Jackson remained mum on her cancellation, illness and some tour dates that had yet to be rescheduled.
At the end of the day, Jackson's fabled tour, which spent at least two months in the headlines with cancellations, reschedules and then final cancellations with delayed refunds in some cities came to a close with LL Cool J, who was opening for the star, bailing and tons of fans who paid upwards of $350 per ticket ready to 'discipline' their idol.
As if the tour's free-fall was not enough, Jackson told Billboard that she and Def Jam had dissolved her recording contract in September, just 14 months after the deal was signed.
At the end of 2008, Janet Jackson was no where to be found on year-end reviews, award nominations, or even Billboard's Top albums in 2008 list. She was also missing from the spotlight, except for the occasional video with long-time boyfriend Jermaine Dupri, and most of all there was no sign of Janet making plans for another album, tour, or really anything for that matter...however, there is that pesky rumor of a bundle of joy in the oven that's still up for debate.
For Janet 2008 turned out to be a rough year both professionally and personally with most of the world having a full view of her worst drop since the infamous Super Bowl incident with Justin Timberlake.
We truly hope Janet has a better 2009 which is possible with two new projects she has coming forth including a rumored lingerie line and a reality show with MTV (similar to So You Think You Can Dance[Fox]).
For old times sake here's Janet's most infamous 2008 video "Feedback":

Janet is an Icon and she still rocks. Like one writer put it, Janet feeds off her crowd like any performer. If the crowd sucks then the artist doesn't want to give them their all. As far as promotion these record companies seem to abandon artist after they get a certain age or if there is some kind of controversy. But Janet has enough money and talent she can sit back and do other things. Ms. Jackson has nothing to prove and I hope nothing but the best for my girl. She outranks any of these imitation females out here these days. About the only one who came close to Janet is Aaliyah. Beyonce, Britney, Ciara and the rest of those girls could never dance the way Janet has over the years. Beyonce is definitely an imitator/copier of every performer in the business. Britney is too stiff with her upper body when she dances and Ciara is too stiff and not fluidy enough like Janet...so none of them can touch her. Janet, you rock. Good luck girl - Luv Ya.
discipline was a great cd. the nov. 1st show at the garden in NYC was legendary! anyone who was there would know. now, the oct. 17th show.. not so hot but janet feeds off the crowd and the crowd SUCKED at that show... mind u, the MSG show - off da chain. so u figure it out.
now when you're not supported by a label, no promotion for your brand new cd, or tour. and you are a legend already in the business kinda makes you sick of proving yourself over n over, when you proved yourself over 15 years ago when you had 7 #1 hits off of one cd!!!!!!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!! if janet was not who she is... she would have no trouble doing what she's doing at her age... let alone what color she is.
janet has been a childhood crush of mine
she is an icon
i saw her in oakland and she rocked it
all the best to her on the new year
I have been a longtime Janet fan since her debut on the Jackson's variety show in the 70's, but their has to come a time when an artist has to take responsibility for their complete artistry and vision! There has been a serious disconnect with mainstream radio(which is not Janet's fault), that needs to explored by her next record label! There were 1 or 2, J.D. well produced tracks on Discipline: but they don't connect well musically. She has also not pushed herself as an artist/vocalist/songwriter by hiding her band, performing the same exact dance routines and overvamping her vocals in the studio;even though she looked great in '08!She also needs to stop feuding with labels over single releases. As long as they release 4 video singles off one CD, then let the labels choose them! Some songs sounded like Britney & Miley and her videos have cheapened over the years for an icon of her status!
I look forward to her new projects and her visonary outlook in '09! Best of luck to Janet!
