"I'm in an even more experimental and really fun feeling phase right now so I think alot of that just came out when I was doing my photoshoot," R&B singer/model Ciara said just days after Vibe's now controversial October 2008 cover premiered.
Posing nearly nude, Ciara raised many eyebrows when the October issue of Vibe Magazine hit newstands. While the article quoted Ciara stating "I'm not gonna hold back too much," that very quote would prove to be false as the singer and a host of others including Vibe's editor in chief would have plenty to say about the cover photos.
Premiering after a controversial brush with Robin Thicke, who accused the magazine of denying him the cover due to the fact that he was white, Vibe pushed Ciara's cover as its hottest fall issue while Ciara told fans about her new image and forthcoming album "Fantasy Ride," originally due for release in the fall.
Calling the photoshoot "Very fun and experimental" at first Ciara seemed content with the cover and its lack of clothing. Days later Ciara recanted her statement:
During the week of September 24th, Ciara was quoted stating "I was upset that when I saw the photos, everything was gone. I definitely want to make it clear that I was going in to do something artistic."
Claiming that the photos had been airbrushed to make her appear nude Ciara said "When I saw the photos, I was a little bothered because the photos
appear as if I was nude, and I wasn't nude. I reached out to [Danyel Smith-Vibe Editor] -
I sent her a letter - and I was a little upset, too, in the fact that
she didn't respond to me, and that happened prior to me reading her
quote on the Internet. That definitely bothered me, just because of the
fact that I wasn't nude."
After being called out, Smith sat down with KISS FM to dispel any rumors related to the photoshoot. Stating Ciara was okay with the shoot, in fact very in tune with the direction of the shoot, Smith came out victorious in the end with Ciara dispelling the rumor that she'd filed suit against the magazine.
Today Ciara insists "I know what was there, I know what was taken, and I know what was
done. And then to look at the book and go, 'It's gone' - it was just
very upsetting to me."
As for her then heavily promoted project "Fantasy Ride," it is now set for release mid-2009.
