R&B music reigned supreme at the 51st Annual Grammy Award nomination special Wednesday.
Nearly 30 R&B/soul singers ranging from Al Green to Chris Brown were nominated in fields including Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Best New Artist.
Leading the pack of R&B nominees is singer/songwriter Ne-Yo. The "Year Of The Gentleman" star picked up six nominations, landing just behind the Grammys leading nominee Lil Wayne, who picked up eight nominations for "The Carter III".
"Year of the Gentleman," released in September was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Contemporary R&B Album of the Year while its singles "Closer" and "Miss Independent" earned the remaining four nominations including Best R&B song.
R&B singer/songwriter Jazmine Sullivan, who penned the majority of her J Records debut "Fearless," dominated the R&B field with an astounding five nominations. Like Ne-Yo, Sullivan's debut was released in September featuring the hit single "Need U Bad" and current single "Bust Your Windows". Earning her first major award nod, Sullivan was nominated for Best New Artist where she is accompanied by the Jonas Brothers, Duffy, Adele, and Lady Antebellum.
Jazmine Sullivan's remaining nominations, not including Best Contemporary R&B Album, stem from three records: "Need U Bad," "In Love With Another Man," and "Bust Your Windows," which are nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song respectively.
Former 'Dreamgirls' star Jennifer Hudson, who ironically released her debut in September along with Ne-Yo and Sullivan, picked up four nominations. Hudson's self-titled debut earned nods for Best R&B Song, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance ("Spotlight"), and Best R&B Album. A collaboration with American Idol star Fantasia entitled "I'm His Only Woman" was also nominated for Best R&B Performance By A Duo or Group with Vocals.
Al Green, the master of "Love and Happiness," rounds out the 2009 Grammy Award nominees. Green's new album "Lay It Down" earned three nominations including a nod for Best R&B Album.
Surprisingly, recent efforts from Mariah Carey ("E=MC2") and Erykah Badu ("New Amerykah Pt. 1") were not nominated for any R&B or Pop awards. (Badu's video for "Honey" was however nominated for Best Short Form Music Video.)
Leona Lewis and Raphael Saadiq earned three nominations a piece for their efforts "Spirit' and "The Way I See It." Lewis' "Bleeding Love" was nominated for Record of the Year.
Rihanna, Chris Brown, Keyshia Cole, Jordin Sparks, Mary J. Blige, Trey Songz, Raheem DeVaughn, Eric Benet, J. Holiday, Karina Pasian and Usher were also nominated for awards (see full list of R&B related nominees below, uniquely by artist.)

What's going on with the Grammy? stop voting give the fans the votes..Who every makes these nominations must don't listen to the music or hear about sales..
Keyshia Cole better win something. For years, she has put out hits after hits. It her time! Forget the others. Its time to pay respect to KEYSHIA!
Please Know Jazmine Sullivan's nod's give me hope too! Real Lyrics! Real Music! Check out "Lions, Tigers, and Bears" on her album.....trust me if this had been released sooner, it would have sweeped her category...Real Music is back baby! Shout out to Leona Lewis for Bleeding Love!
WHAT THE HELL?? Beyonce's, Me myself and I?? Was her recent music not good enough?? I don't get it.
Since the Grammys are always on the veteran tip, I thought Keith Sweat would receive a Best R&B male nod and Janet Jackson a best dance nod! Natalie Cole only got one nod! Flo-rida should have at least received a best dance nod because in that catergory that don't look that deep at the lyrics.
very very surprised.
what music have they been listening to?
what happened to chris brown, rihanna, flo-rida and even t-pain!
no longer trust in the grammy's.
i get more excited when i watch award shows which the fans vote. Its more reliable thsese days.which is disappointing.
My fingers are crossed for Mary J Blige .. I hope she wins that category!!
Growing Pains is the best !!!
JAZMINE'S load of nominations are the only thing that give me hope in the music game rite now...
It appears and this has happened in the past in that the Grammys only remember artist's work near the end of the year, and not always what was recorded at the top or during the middle of the year. I also was hoping for The Game & Rick Ross to receive a Best Rap album nod. I thought Usher's more mature sound would give him more nods! No Mariah and only one Mary J. nod, and they wonder why ratings are down every year! Ratings are down on award shows because they are 75% filled with "New Artists" that the public is still getting to know! Even though some of them have been around 3 or 4 years, the newer artists are not "mega stars" like Janet, Madonna, Tina, Garth, Britney: all whom are a better draw for TV ratings because they sell out arenas and staduims worldwide without even having a current CD! Like Alice, I also thought this was a bad year creatively in music!
Taylor Swift and LL Cool J received no nods and I guess the producers made it up to them by choosing them as the hosts!

It's nice to see Jazmine Sullivan & Jennifer Hudson nominated. Some artist I don't even know WHY they are. Glad to see Trey Songz get a Grammy nod & big ups 2 Ne-Yo because his album was real good.
Trey songz congrads but why 4 that song. their are other r&b with good ass song and better vocal should be nominated and ne-yo is a good song writer but his vocal is another story just can't sang. i never buy any of his album. grammy sucks, sucks
IM FLOORED THAT USHER GOT ONE NOMINATION AND NEYO GOT 5 HIS ALBUM SUCKS USHER WORKED SO HARD ON THIS ALBUM AND ONE NOMINATION HE GOT BEST ALBUM NEYO AND BEST ALBUM JONAS BROTHERS COME ON DISNEY TALENT SCREW THE GRAMMYS
I thought rick ross and Plies was going to to nominated because they had a good year in songs and albums.
hello, what about the heavy catigory noms??? i know that disturbed was nominated, but who else made the list??
I'm completely disappointed. I knew this was a bad year in music but I'm shocked this is the best the Grammys could do. Although I gave up on these award shows years ago, like a sucker, I always hope they redeem themselves. Unfortunately, this year is another fail.
OK....Beyonce's song is 2+ years old! I'm sure Sony had to push their weight with that nomination. Even though her album didn't do well, I was hoping for a Janet Jackson nod in the dance catergory!....I also thought Mary J, Chris Brown, Flo-rida, Mariah & Alicia Keys would get more nods! Congrads to Trey Songz for his suprise nod! I was also hoping that Rick Ross and Plies would receive nods!
