Former Soul Train Host, Cornelius Charged With Assault/Battery

Don CorneliusFormer Soul Train host Don Cornelius has been charged with spousal battery, among other charges, in Los Angeles.

According to L.A. news reports, Cornelius' charges stem from two domestic incidents involving his wife last month.

Cornelius was charged with spousal battery, assault with a deadly weapon and dissuading a witness from making a police report, all misdemeanors, city attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan said Friday.

The married 72-year-old producer was taken to jail last month after police were called to his Hollywood Hills home following a report of domestic dispute.

Cornelius was released on $50,000 bail. He could face up to one year in prison for each of the five misdemeanor charges.

    I couldn't have said it any better. Sam I agree with you. God only knows what caused him to do what he did. He's human, and anyone can break under the pressures of stress. I hope that he seeks help.

    Despite his current problems, Don Cornelius deserves more credit from the mainstream entertainment industry and this is the first time the public has heard in controversey out of him like this one. He created an outlet for artists where they could perform and be "routinely and truly" welcomed, which was not common for Black artists back in the late 60's and early 70's. Soultrain was part of our culture on Saturday mornings. Before BET, MTV and VH1, Soultrain set the standards for fashion, dance, comedy and true appeciation for part of our African-American entertainment history.
