Kayla Bliss Picks Singing, 'Because I'm Not Good At Anything Else'
Date: 2010-06-25 | Interview By Staff
Kayla Bliss' music style is a blend of Reggae and Hip Hop with R&B
vocals. The Jamaican born Brooklyn bred singer
came to Singersroom’s attention when she won the A&R Power Summit R&B showcase.
A self-contained artist, Kayla writes and co-produces her music with a
philosophy of “You can't make your heart feel something it won't."
Artists have overused the phrase "my life is a movie," but Kayla has
been able to create visual musical stories that "feed the demented parts of
people's minds... kinda like a horror movie. You know you’re going to be
scared, but you can't look away."
Training Camp in the Brooklyn Youth Chorus… "The Brooklyn Youth Chorus taught
me to identify musical techniques. It plays a huge part in my creative process
because in order to break rules you have to know what they are; if you know
what I mean."
Shed A Tear For Music… "The first song that made me cry was “Journey To The
Past” by Aaliyah for the Anastasia soundtrack. The first two lines are "Heart don't fail me now. Courage don't
desert me. Don't turn back now that we're here." It was exactly what I
needed to hear. My parents were splitting at the time and I was struggling to
stay focused on my dream."
Following The Path of a Musician… "Because I'm not good at anything else."
(Laughs)
Drawing the Line on Personal Lyrics… "I will sing about anything. There is a
way to say things so that listeners won't get offended. I try to be cautious of
that."
Finding A Good Man… "I think that you will find a good man if you are open to
finding one without being desperate. If you don't believe good men exist, then
they won't."
Nonstop Love For R&B… "Because R&B is the only marriage that will last
forever. Rhythm loves blues. Blues loves rhythm. They will always love each other."
