Born Martell Nelson, in Jamaica West Indies and raised in heart and soul of Brooklyn. R&B singer/songwriter -Razah (ray-za) is making a profound name for himself within the music industry, despite the lack of a major label showcasing his unchecked power and talents.
The unsigned 23-year-old R&B sensation did the impossible back in ‘04 and exploded into radio's regular rotation earning over 1,000 spins with his breakout single “Feels So Good”- a remake of Teddy Pendergrass's 1978 classic “When Somebody Loves You Back.” Now that he is backed by Hot 97’s DJ Enuff and Manhood Entertainment, Razah has hit the airways again with a powerful new single (“Where Do We Go”) and is currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on his debut album A Breath of Fresh Air.
Razah's hustling ambition sparked a seven label bidding war due to the success of “Feels So Good.” After signing with Virgin Records, it became apparent that the label's and artist's vision wasn't aligned, so Razah asked to be released. This setback helped develop an even stronger drive to be successful in his career.
With music still at the forefront, Razah collaborated with Grammy Award winning hype man Fat Man Scoop for his second single “I’m in Love With You” in '05. In '06 Razah showed his entrepreneurial ability when he financed his own video for the record “We Ridin,” as he teamed up with rappers Juvenile and Bun B. Razah’s star power became evident when he collaborated with Dipset Juelz Santana, to record “Changes” for Juelz's sophomore album What the Game's Been Missin which has reached platinum status. '06 has been promising year as Razah join forces with DJ Kay Slay to record the first single "Can't Stop the Reign" featuring Shaquille O'Neal, Bun B and Papoose. The second single "One and Only" which was produced by Cool and Dre featuring Razah and Remy Martin for the compilation album The Champions.
Raised in the infamous Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, where role models were scarce for a young Razah. He praises his mother for raising him in the absence of his biological father. "My mother will tell you that she is both my mother and father," Razah says, "She's plays a major part in my music and I want to be able to play my album for her. Razah counts Michael Jackson, R. Kelly and Reggae legends Beres Hammond and Sanchez as his chief musical influences. Beyond his musical talents, lies a mogul mentality which Razah developed by launching his career independently.
“Razah is no doubt the hardest working unsigned R&B artist in the industry, says“ DJ Enuff "I love music. This is all I know," says Razah who pauses before revealing his ultimate goal, "I want to make music that people would remake 10 years from now, just like I did with “Feels So Good.” The album is an interesting hybrid of R&B/Hip-hop with the seductive and soothing vocals. Razah is a breath of fresh air for the music playground, so breathe A Breath of Fresh Air with Razah!
