She had her first brush with fame by winning the CBS television talent show Star Search in 1986, singing Whitney Houston's 1986 hit "How Will I Know". Shortly after, she signed a record deal with Capitol Records and released her self-titled debut album in January 1988, all at the tender age of 12.
