She had her first brush with fame by winning the CBS television talent show Star Search in 1986, singing Whitney Houston's 1986 hit "How Will I Know". Shortly after, she signed a record deal with Capitol Records and released her self-titled debut album in January 1988, all at the tender age of 12. She found some success with the singles "Hide and Seek", "Symptoms of True Love" and her remake of "Imagine" (originally composed by John Lennon).
